What do our children <em>really<\/em> need from the education system as they prepare for life in an uncertain future?\u00a0 \u00a0I know that the prevailing political climate around education is perceived as being all about getting back to the basics of core knowledge, and that many colleagues feel constrained and stifled.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0But we \u2013 teachers everywhere \u2013 remain responsible for the learning experiences we create in our classrooms, and I can\u2019t believe that we don\u2019t have the opportunity, and indeed the responsibility, to raise our voices and help to shape the future of learning.<!--more--><\/p>\n\n\t\t<style type=\"text\/css\">\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 {\n\t\t\t\tmargin: auto;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 .gallery-item {\n\t\t\t\tfloat: left;\n\t\t\t\tmargin-top: 10px;\n\t\t\t\ttext-align: center;\n\t\t\t\twidth: 33%;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 img {\n\t\t\t\tborder: 2px solid #cfcfcf;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 .gallery-caption {\n\t\t\t\tmargin-left: 0;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t\/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes\/media.php *\/\n\t\t<\/style>\n\t\t<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-18 gallery-columns-3 gallery-size-thumbnail'><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/21stcenturylearners.org.uk\/?attachment_id=19'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/21stcenturylearners.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSC03850-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt><\/dl><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/21stcenturylearners.org.uk\/?attachment_id=20'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/21stcenturylearners.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/DSC03859-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt><\/dl>\n\t\t\t<br style='clear: both' \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>In March this year I brought together a fantastic group of innovative educators at the conference \u201821<sup>st<\/sup> Century Learners \u2013 investing in skills for their future\u2019.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.richardgerver.com\/\">Richard Gerver <\/a>gave an inspiring call to action, reminding us that the real experts in education are the people working in schools every day, and challenging us to think how we can remodel our schools to make them relevant to the demands of the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century.\u00a0 Alec Patton of Innovation Unit got us thinking about what it takes to truly engage learners in their education, and gave an overview of his fantastic guide to project-based learning \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innovationunit.org\/blog\/201203\/were-launching-work-matters-teachers-guide-project-based-learning\">\u2018Work that Matters\u2019<\/a>.\u00a0 Stephen Breslin of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.futurelab.org.uk\/\">Futurelab<\/a> gave us a glimpse of the challenges the future holds and the implications for \u2018the workforce of tomorrow\u2019, and he urged us to engage with and in research \u2013 to make sure that our innovations are based on sound evidence of what works.\u00a0 Lizzie Lewis of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapere.org.uk\/\">Sapere <\/a>showed us the power of Philosophy for Children for developing a supportive environment for collaborative enquiry and critical and creative thinking.\u00a0 Gordon Poad of Cap-a-Pie Associates introduced us to his vision for Creative Enquiry-Based Learning, and Rachel Billington of Partners in Creative Learning took a fresh look at the place of creativity in the curriculum.\u00a0 Finally, children and teachers from Kingsland Primary School in Stoke-on-Trent gave a wonderful example of the way their curriculum develops creativity and independence.<\/p>\n<p>It was great to see a group of people with such passion for learning and for the futures of our children sharing such inspiring examples of what great education can look like. It filled me with hope and excitement about the future of learning, and renewed my commitment to work towards a vision of a truly relevant and engaging experience of school for all our 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century Learners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I (and, I know, many of you) have felt for some time now that we need to get off the school treadmill and take a long, hard look at what we are doing in education.
