Dr Neil Phillipson

21st Century Learners is the business of Dr Neil Phillipson – that’s me!  I have seventeen years of experience as a teacher, subject leader and consultant / trainer.  After a career as a medicinal chemist in the pharmaceutical industry I became a secondary school science teacher in 1999.  I was a Head of Science in Stoke-on-Trent from 2006 – 2009 and a local authority consultant in Stoke from 2009 – 2012. In this last role I became more involved with primary education and spent a year teaching in Year 2 from 2012 – 2013 – I have some experience of teaching in all five key stages.

I started 21st Century Learners in 2013.  I believe that dialogue is central to a quality education (do have a browse through my blog posts if you would like to know more about my thinking on this).  As such, I aim to support children to learn through the medium of dialogue and to learn how to get better at dialogue – hence the tag line ‘Learning through Dialogue. Learning for Dialogue’.

I am a registered trainer in Philosophy for Children with Sapere, and an Associate Trainer with the University of the First Age. I have written a book about Dialogic Education with Professor Rupert Wegerif of the University of Exeter.  You may also encounter me in my role as a hub-leader for the Primary Science Quality Mark or as a Professional Tutor for Keele and North Staffordshire Primary SCITT (KNSPS). All the approaches I use in school are underpinned by evidence of impact – please explore the site to find out more.
